At Front Porch Pets, we’re all about real food for animals — whether they’ve got four legs, two wings, or spend their days scratching in the coop. Our flagship treat, Sam’s Yams, was chef-created and patented for dental health, and it starts with one simple ingredient: the humble sweet potato.
So… why don’t we grow them ourselves? Great question.
We’re based in Wild Rose, Wisconsin — a place known for snowdrifts, hearty dogs, and honest people. When we first started, we did try growing our own sweet potatoes. We tilled the soil, planted the slips, and waited with the kind of hope only a farmer (or a dog waiting for dinner) can understand.
We even visited organic sweet potato farms right here in Wisconsin — because supporting local is important to us. But the truth was clear: the spuds were small, not sweet enough, and just didn’t have the density we needed for a chew that lasts.
We could’ve forced it. Used more inputs. Tried to engineer a solution.
Instead, we did something simpler: we listened to the land.
We went south — to family farms in the warm, red-clay soil of the American South, where sweet potatoes have been grown for generations. The kind of farms where the soil knows its job, and the farmers treat their land like an heirloom.
And that’s where we found what we were looking for: plump, sweet, sun-kissed sweet potatoes— the perfect base for a chew that’s good for your dog’s teeth, their gut, and their joy. We’ve been working with some of these farming families for over 10 years. Not because it’s trendy, but because it’s right. These aren’t transactions — they’re relationships. We know their names. They know ours. And every Sam’s Yams chew carries that legacy.
Back at our kitchen in Wisconsin, we dehydrate each yam “slow and low” — a technique that locks in color, antioxidants, and that irresistible flavor dogs go nuts for. No high-heat shortcuts. No mystery ingredients. Just real food, treated with respect. And yes — we still grow a lot of our other ingredients right here: herbs from our garden, greens from our greenhouses, apples from our orchard. But when it comes to sweet potatoes? We source with intention, not ego. Because at the end of the day, your dog doesn’t care where the treat came from — just that it’s delicious, safe, and worth every chew. And we care enough to make sure it is.
